Making the decision to move a parent or loved one into residential aged care is never easy. It often comes with a mix of concern, relief, uncertainty and many practical questions. If you’re unsure where to begin, you’re not alone. At Highfields Manor, we guide families through every stage of the process — clearly, compassionately and at your pace.
Here’s how the journey typically unfolds.
Step 1: Starting with an ACAT assessment
Before entering residential aged care, an assessment through the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) is required to access government-funded support.
ACAT teams include experienced health professionals such as doctors, nurses and social workers. Their role is to assess an older person’s overall care needs and determine the level of support they’re eligible to receive. This includes looking at physical health, medical conditions, memory and cognition, emotional wellbeing, daily living abilities and social circumstances.
To apply, you can register through My Aged Care. The application process is straightforward and usually takes around 15–20 minutes, provided you have a Medicare card. People aged 65 and over — or 50 and over for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people — can apply.
Once submitted, an assessor will arrange a face-to-face meeting, either at home or in hospital. Family members are encouraged to attend, and interpreter services can be organised if needed.
If residential aged care is approved, you’re then ready to explore suitable homes — including Highfields Manor.
We welcome you to contact us at any time to discuss availability or arrange a tour.
Step 2: Finding the right residential aged care home
Choosing an aged care residence involves more than comparing rooms or fees. It’s about finding a place where your loved one will feel comfortable, respected and genuinely cared for.
Things to consider include:
-
Proximity to family and friends
-
The atmosphere and overall environment
-
The experience and approach of the care team
-
The home’s philosophy around dignity and independence
-
Lifestyle programs and community connection
At Highfields Manor, we’ve created a peaceful, supportive setting where residents are treated as individuals — not numbers. Our team focuses on building meaningful relationships and tailoring care to each person’s preferences, routines and needs. Maintaining independence wherever possible and preserving dignity are central to everything we do.
Step 3: Understanding residential aged care costs
Financial considerations are an important part of planning the transition into aged care. While the fee structure may seem complex at first, it becomes much clearer when broken down.
Residential aged care costs can include:
-
A basic daily care fee
-
A means-tested care fee (based on income and assets)
-
Accommodation costs
-
Optional services or additional lifestyle inclusions
Government subsidies cover a significant portion of care costs for eligible residents. Our team can help you understand how fees are calculated, what assistance may apply, and what payment options are available — so you can make decisions with clarity and confidence.
Step 4: Getting ready for the move
The move into aged care is a major life transition. Thoughtful preparation can make it smoother for everyone involved.
Encourage your loved one to bring personal belongings that provide comfort and familiarity — photographs, favourite bedding, artwork or small cherished items. These touches help transform a room into a personal space.
Honest, supportive conversations are also important. Including your loved one in decisions wherever possible helps them feel empowered and respected during the change. Keeping elements of familiar daily routines can further ease the adjustment.
Our team at Highfields Manor works closely with families before and during move-in day to ensure the transition feels calm, supported and well organised.
Supporting families every step of the way
Aged care is not just a change for the resident — it’s a transition for the whole family. At Highfields Manor, we value open communication and ongoing involvement. Families are welcome to visit, participate in care discussions and remain actively connected in their loved one’s life.
